The Elephant & Castle…

Located on the edge of Wheathampstead on the way to Harpenden in leafy Amwell, we are the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle -  Popular with bike and horse riders along with walkers and those looking for a large open space where you can dine, drink and relax. Our traditional 18th century building is surrounded by two large gardens with plenty of tall trees, filled with cosy corners and two wood burning stoves. We also have two giant tipis to accommodate you no matter what the English climate throws at us. There is even a flint lined, 200ft well inside the pub. Mind your step…

The Bar

We are a total free house… despite the historic Greene King decor on the front of our lovely pub. We either make or source all of our beverages from independent suppliers. The real ale, craft beer and some lager is brewed only a couple of miles away. And we have spent ages carefully curating our wine, gin, rum and whisky lists. The lagers we buy in are chosen because they offer great flavour and quality but we can swap these out at any time to suit the season or taste buds of our customers.

We also have a fantastic range of low or no alcohol products. From sparkling wines, ciders, real ales and lagers. To gins and other tasty treats for those that wish to abstain or keep a clear head in the morning. These include gluten free options. Please ask the bar staff for more details.

Our Menu

Vegetables are delivered fresh every morning from our local partner who source locally grown produce. Our fish is caught fresh each day from the harbours of South East England. Our beef and lamb are locally sourced from farms in Hertfordshire & Bedfordshire . The chicken is free range and fed on brewers grains produced in our brewery. Which obviously also provides 100% of our award winning real ale. We are also the exclusive stockist of a fabulous wine from Wimbushes, grown and produced down the road in St Albans. As well as wines from Norfolk and Ware, Hertfordshire that sit perfectly alongside another 40+ delicious wines from around the world. Our Desserts are all hand made in Hertfordshire by Brookes Bakes.

Sourcing locally is not the cheapest option... but it does ensure great quality and a thriving local economy.

We have parking front and rear and are a children and dog-friendly pub. So, if it’s a special occasion, a refreshing pint after a long ride or you just fancy relaxing with some great food & drink we will be happy to help. Simply give us a call or pop in and see one of the team. We look forward to seeing you soon…

Founded in 2014 Farr Brew is the brain child of Nick Farr, a man with an enthusiasm for top quality ale who started his brewing journey in 1999. In 2015 he teamed up with long-term friend Matt Elvidge and Farr Brew became a limited company. Matt brings his experience from years of working in the creative, advertising and sales industries to the role of Sales Director.

Farr Brew was founded on the principles of creating great tasting real ales brewed with craft and a commitment to quality. Based on the success of the award winning beers and their reputation for customer satisfaction Farr brew have expanded over the past few years and now run five very successful pubs across Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire. They are stocked in a large number of wonderful pubs, off licences, restaurants and farm shops. And run outside bars at music festivals, food markets, Christmas events, weddings and other private functions throughout the year. At all of these events you can find their friendly and hard working ‘Best Bar Staff by Farr’ ready to pour you a pint.

Farr Brew is a multi awarding brewery that has the environment and the community at its heart. Awarded ‘The Greenest Brewery’ in 2018 (nationally) they look for every opportunity to protect their surroundings whilst maximising their effort. One of the ways they do this, is using spent brewing grains to feed the local high welfare livestock which feature on their pub menus. Please look at the website for more details. www.farrbrew.com
